1. Dolce & Gabbana - Italian Love - EDT
First up in the list of top 5 designer summer fragrances in 2022, in no particular order, is a new release from the house of Dolce & Gabbana. Following in the footsteps of its older sibling Light Blue Forever, Italian Love has a sharp and pronounced grapefruit opening that really smells outstanding. The perfumer’s ability to take a scent and make it smell like a hyper-realistic freshly cut grapefruit is still mind blowing to me and it’s carried over in this new fragrance as well. The mid and dry down smell very close to Light Blue Forever but you can catch the subtle additions of the green and woodsy notes. Overall, this scent is very fresh, very citrusy and is a fragrance that you consistently smell all day long, around 6 to 8 hours. The summertime sun will activate this fragrance to an 11 and is a big complement puller in my experience. Definitely worth a grab in your summer collection.
2. Giorgio Armani - Acqua di Gio - EDP
Next up we have a new release from the house of Giorgio Armani. This is a new release that is separated by its older brother by a mere 26 years and it’s honestly about time. Acqua di Gio EDT was released back in 1996 and was literally on everybody’s dresser in the 90s. It’s the fragrance that you could find at any store including Walmart and smelled absolutely fantastic. So when Giorgio Armani announced this fragrance back in January in 2022 everyone went nuts in the fragrance community because it was finally time for the EDT to grow up and become the beast-mode fragrance we were all waiting for. The opening is a bit citrusy and aromatic but still has that aquatic freshness that you can expect from the Acqua di Gio line. It’s not overly sweet or heavy on the citrus but has a really nice balance. The Clary Sage in the mid followed by the mineral notes and woodsy tones in the dry down give this one a definite seat at the summertime table in my collection. A great new twist to an old classic that will surely be a flanker that sticks around for a long time. Longevity is around 7 to 9 hours for me and it will really stand out with 5 to 7 sprays.
3. Narciso Rodriguez - Blue Noir - Parfum
Third on the list we have a new flanker from the Narciso Rodriguez Blue Noir line in a parfum concentration. The newest member of the Blue Noir family has fresh citrus and cypress in the opening but once it starts to dry down you get that beautiful iris along with suede and tonka bean notes. This is a good summer fragrance but I think this one would be more geared towards a “night out” summer fragrance but can still be worn as an all-day fragrance as well. It’s predecessor the EDP version was very bright and floral throughout, while the parfum version has a lot of spice and leather notes to complement the citrus in the opening. Longevity on this one is around 8 to 10 hours and your scent bubble is going to be moderate to strong depending on how many sprays you unleash.
4. Christian Dior - Homme Sport (2021) - EDT
Fourth on the list is a new flanker from the Chrisitnan Dior Homme line that isn’t remotely new to fragrance enthusiasts but is still, new…I guess. Even though it’s labeled “2021” this was in fact released in early 2022, however this isn’t its first time at the rodeo. This fragrance actually came out in 2008 and has been reformulated four times with the latest 2021 version being the fourth. Francois Demachy has been the nose behind all four of these reformulations and while I haven’t personally smelled the previous three, I can say this current one is a very fresh take on the current Dior Homme DNA (which would be a story for another day because yeah, there’s lots of those too). With bergamot, pink pepper and incense being the main three notes, I wouldn’t really categorize this as a “sport” fragrance but I wouldn’t say it’s bad either. Longevity for an EDT is surprisingly good around 6 - 8 hours and while you won’t leave as big of a lasting trail behind you like Dior Homme 2020, it’s still a great summer fragrance that fits nicely in my collection.
5. Terre d’Hermes - Eau Givree - EDP
Last on the list is the newest flanker from Hermes Paris, Terre d'Hermes Eau Givree. I couldn’t have a top 5 new summer fragrances without having this fragrance somewhere in this list. Fresh, bright citrus notes burst from this fragrance and are more heavily pronounced in the summertime sun. Hints of mineral and woody notes round this fragrance off in the dry down while still keeping that bright citrus DNA front and center. A perfect addition to anybody’s collection. You can expect around 6 to 8 hours of longevity with this fragrance and your scent bubble will be moderate to broad depending on how heavy handed you are.
